Questions About Mom’s Safety
- What are the signs we should watch for that mean she may be getting worse on this medication?
- What does the black box warning mean for a postpartum mother?
- Could this drug affect her ability to bond emotionally with the baby?
- How quickly could suicidal thoughts or dangerous behaviors show up — and what should we do if they do?
- What is the plan if she reacts badly or has a sudden change in behavior?
Questions About the Baby
- Will this medication transfer into breast milk? If so, what risks does that pose to the baby?
- Have studies been done on infants exposed to this drug during breastfeeding?
- Could the baby go into withdrawal if mom stops suddenly or changes dose?
Questions About Alternatives
- Before medication, can we rule out medical causes like thyroid, vitamin deficiencies, or hormone imbalance?
- What non-drug supports are available for postpartum mood (therapy, sleep support, lactation help, nutrition)?
- Are there safe community resources for moms (support groups, home visits, postpartum doulas)?
Questions About Monitoring & Duration
- If she starts this drug, how long is she expected to remain on it?
- How often will you check in during the first 4–6 weeks?
- Will you involve me (the partner/loved one) in monitoring her safety?
- If she wants to come off later, what is your tapering plan — and do you know how to do it safely?
